
Dr. Marios C. Georgiou is the Head of the PROTEAS Research Facility at the Energy, Environment and Water Research Center of The Cyprus Institute. He holds a PhD in Environmental and Atmospheric Sciences from The Cyprus Institute, and BSc and MSc degrees in Physics from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
His research focuses on renewable thermal desalination, concentrated solar thermal (CST) technologies, hybrid renewable energy systems, and advanced energy storage solutions. In recent years, he has led the design, implementation, and operation of pilot-scale proof-of-concept (PoC), leading EU-funded projects and multiple industrial demonstration projects with international partners. His work includes integrated holistic approaches like the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus, with the primary goal of bridging research with industry to accelerate the deployment of sustainable energy and water solutions.
Dr. Georgiou has authored peer-reviewed publications, presented at leading international conferences, and chaired sessions on solar desalination and CST. He oversees the daily operation and technical development of the PROTEAS Facility, established as a strategic hub for renewable energy testing and innovation in Europe and the Mediterranean.
