
Socratis Pilavakis was born in 1982 and together with his family has been running the exporting company Sun Potatoes in tandem with a group of growers from all around Cyprus but mainly in the Red Villages. Between 2006 he completed his Bachelors from the University of Athens in the field of agroeconomics. The company has been in business for over 3 decades, focusing their operations in growing, sorting and packaging of a variety of vegetables, with potatoes being their flagship product. Their customers includes supermarkets, wholesale markets and potato industries in Cyprus and internationally.
Since Cyprus joined the EU in May 2004, Sun Potatoes has established a longstanding cooperation with Dutch international seedpotato exporters HZPC in the use of new potato varieties and agriculture technologies suitable for the climate conditions of Cyprus. To meet the challenges of our time the last years, Sun Potatoes and HZPC have immersed in onsite development and experimentation of new resilient potato varieties that will be able to survive extreme saline and drought conditions but also crop diseases. Since this year, they joined forces with the Agricultural Research Institute of Cyprus in improving the test and the collection of data.
