Shipping sector transition to low emissions
The training seminar – subsidised by HRDA – aims to highlight the necessary transition of the maritime sector towards reducing carbon emissions, a crucial step in the fight against climate change and the mitigation of the environmental impact of maritime transport. In the context of the EU’s ambitious goal with the “Fit for 55” legislative package and the international guidelines of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the shipping sector is called upon to radically overhaul its operations. With a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels, shipowners are faced with increased demands and opportunities for environmentally friendly innovations.
The training seminar covers:
- An analysis of the new regulatory framework for shipping on GHG emissions, including the obligation of carbon pricing that increases operational costs.
- Ways in which the shipping sector can respond to the growing global demand for low or zero carbon footprint fuels by adopting measures for improved energy efficiency.
- Strategies and economic mechanisms that can bridge the cost gap between traditional fossil fuels and carbon neutral fuels, enhancing sustainable growth and investment in green shipping.
The aim of the seminar is to provide participants with a comprehensive framework on current developments, challenges and perspectives in the field of green shipping, allowing them to evaluate the available options and formulate strategies for a more sustainable future.
The important takeaways from the seminar are:
- Name the various operational options for decarbonising shipping.
- Effectively justify the advantages and disadvantages of alternative fuels for shipping
- Select the decarbonisation strategies of major shipping companies
- Participate in the design of business models for decarbonizing shipping
The seminar is approved by Human Resource Development Authority of Cyprus (HRDA).
